Hannah and Cameron didnât think to question whether or not Ned was telling the truth. It was so clear on his face that this was something that haunted him and that pain was genuine. They knew it was true. Savannah was his sister, and she had gone missing. He was worried deeply about her. Somehow, they had gotten ahold of this missing womanâs wallet.
Hannah handed Ned the wallet right away, and he looked shocked just upon seeing it. Like he knew it was Savannahâs. Still, he held back his words until he opened it, and then tears came to his eyes.
âThatâs Savannah,â he said, gazing at the license photo. âThis is my sisterâs wallet. Where did you find it?â
âMy daughter found it,â Hannah explained, shocked at this new revelation that something like this would be at their house. âShe found it by a pond at our house.â
âWhere do you live?â Ned asked. âWeâre going to have to take this straight to the police. Youâre going to have to tell them everything. Iâm sure theyâll want to search the area. But I want to know where it is too because the investigators havenât been too helpful in this. I suspect theyâre being influenced by someone with a lot of money and a lot invested in making sure the truth doesnât come out. Iâve been on this search mostly on my own.â
âThat sounds really tough,â Hannah said. âIâm sorry to hear youâre dealing with that. I canât imagine how stressful that is paired with your sisterâs disappearance.â She paused. âDo you know Lucille and David Henderson?â
âYes,â Ned replied, his face darkening. âI know them all too well.â
âIâm their daughter,â Hannah said. âI inherited their house. Thatâs where weâve been living. Thatâs where the wallet was found.â
Ned shook his head. âI knew it,â he said in a sharp tone that surprised them. âI knew he had something to do with this. Or at least, I knew he was covering it up. I wouldnât have expected to find the wallet there, but Iâm certainly not surprised.â
When Ned looked back up at them, there was wild anger in his eyes. Suddenly, Hannah was frightened. Because it looked like this man hated them.
âYou need to leave,â Ned said. âThough Iâm sure the police will show up at your house anyway. I donât want anything to do with you or your family.â
âIâm sorry,â Hannah mumbled.
She turned to leave as he asked, but something stopped her. Because she needed answers. She needed to protect her family. And Ned might be able to help her if she could figure out a way to talk to him.
âWhy?â Cameron asked, rooted to the spot. âI donât mean to cause more problems for you. Youâre clearly already going through a lot. But we have a sort of mystery of our own to solve. And as you know, we havenât been here long. We donât know whatâs going on with all of this. We donât know what reason youâd have to dislike Lucille and David.
